From the Desk: July 2009
Dear friends,
It is an exciting and expectant moment for us as we press “Publish” on the first edition of Kinaara, a new online literary magazine for the youth of South Asia and the diaspora. Kinaara, as we have mentioned elsewhere before, is a dream and an experiment. We are attempting to explore our various identities as South Asian and as the youth, to give voice and visibility to our opinions, and to share and promote our artistic expressions. In doing so, we are also trying to build a safe space for mutual understanding beyond the scope of hatred or bigotry, where each of our views and lifestyles is treated with respect.
Many thanks are due at this moment, to many people without whom this point would not have been reached. Thanks to Omair Anwar for being with us from the inception and contributing in an editorial capacity to the July edition. Thanks to Karno Guhathakurta for designing the Kinaara logo, and to Chirag Batra for building us a website in precisely a week’s time. Thanks to Neel Dutt for his support and advice. Thanks to the Seagull Foundation for the Arts for letting us use the Seagull Bookstore for our launch programme; and to Dr. Rimi B. Chatterjee, Mr. Pratim D. Gupta, Dr. Kavita Panjabi and Mr. Oishik Sircar for agreeing to accompany us on the occasion. Many thanks, finally, to each of you who have come across our notices, spread the word among your friends, had the faith to send Kinaara your work and are visiting our website to check out our first edition. Your overwhelming support and goodwill will continue to sustain us.
The July edition of Kinaara is selected from a large number of submissions keeping in mind the diversity in perspective, opinion and style among our contributors. We have attempted to balance the lyrical with the macabre; and serious social concern with delightfully imaginative fiction. We have also brought you an interview with acclaimed author Melissa Pritchard, who had visited Calcutta in the early part of this year.

“Which was only the third option. The first

or was it authentic nakedness?” … Ishita Basu Mallik
Sounds like Saptarshi.

the 1st edition as far as the content goes is simply mind blowing, however i feel the format as Ali has stated could be more jazzed up…as in it should have a more youth feel to it. Try and make it more spunky and Youth appealing guys and see Kinaara sky rocket to success!!! cheers :)

I’d like to extend a compliment to Rahel Aima, who’s piece I loved. Such resonance, I often felt it was being generated by my own brain.
